You can have more or less, but about five or six is really the best amount of blossoms to start off with. Step 3: When step 2 is completed, use your free hand and wrap it around the flowers. Pull the needle first, and then pull the twine softly through each of the flowers. This process should be repeated as many times as you need to repeat it until the lei is the length that it needs to be. The process for making Hawaiian leis is fairly simple, but it does require a good bit of skill and practice to make the leis look neat and tidy without destroying the blooms. Depending on where you live, there may be classes offered that teach people how to make Hawaiian leis.
